Another Day in Seasonal Eating
Remember when my friend and I went out to my family’s house to harvest from their garden while they were out of town? Well she returned the favor BIG time today. We went to HER family’s house to pick apples and pears from their orchard!
It was lovely. There were Asian pears. They blew my mind. I’ve had them from the grocery store but they were nowhere as good as these.
We picnicked in the orchard…and young love abounded.
Okay, maybe he cares more about the shade than her, but it was cute to watch them babble.
The older boys did their share of romping together as well.
And this is why going out to the country, be it my family or her family, is so amazing, our boys can run free and wild and as long as they’re within eyesight (which is considerable farther out there than in the city) they can let loose.
Of course with all this kid play that meant mommy and mommy could enjoy our picking for a bit.
It was actually really hot and sunny today which is a bit different than the past couple weeks but it was all good, we just didn’t open our eyes for the majority of the day.
Once our babies got super cranky we called it quits…but I ended up with over 55lbs of fruit. 32lbs+ of pears (both Asian and European) and 22lbs+ of apples. Can you tell the kids started acting up once we got started on the apple trees? Eh, I’ll say that amount will keep me busy for a while.
In fact, like any novice home canner would do, I immediately went to my hardware store and bought a couple cases of jars……totally normal.
In fact, the hardware store is such a frequent place for me that I always have coupons and rewards cash so I manged to get one case half off. It made me feel special.
So until the boys go to bed I’ll probably look for recipes to make SOMETHING interesting out of these. Then I’m gonna get to work. I won’t mention how many the boys and I ate but I’ve got to get some of these bad boys prepped and out of my hair. I know over fifty pounds of apples and pears won’t fit into two dozen jars so I’m thinking more jars are in order. haha, just kidding. But perhaps some dehydration? Maybe some baking? Definitely some ideas to knock around.
Anyway, just gonna roast up some beets that this same glorious friend gave me from her garden and eat them with kale chips. It’s like my fav meal ever.
Except, if you’ll believe it, her beets are even more beautiful than these because they’re the stripey pink kind. Excited!
Question: Do you ever go to orchards? I’m sure you’re normal and beets aren’t your favorite food but have you tried kale chips yet?
